Summary: In this interactive, hands-on session, participants will review their pediatric readiness self assessments with faculty, discuss evidence-based strategies to address noted gaps, and practice a novel approach to high quality pediatric CPR.

Synopsis: In 2006 in the “Future of Emergency Care” series, the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine) noted deficiencies in pediatric emergency care in both prehospital and emergency department (ED) settings, including the availability of pediatric equipment, access to supplies and medications, training for staff, and policies in which the unique needs of children are addressed. Although there have been marked improvements in many areas of everyday pediatric readiness, variability in pediatric emergency care and a need for improvement remain across the continuum. Communities, EMS agencies, and hospitals can and should partner to promote pediatric readiness and the skills needed to provide high quality emergency care to all children, especially the sickest who require resuscitation.

In this interactive, hands on session, participants will review their pediatric readiness self assessments with faculty, discuss evidence-based strategies to address noted gaps, and practice a novel approach to high quality pediatric CPR. Upon completion, participants will be well equipped to apply these tools in their local care environments and move the needle forward on pediatric readiness and resuscitation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to integrate evidenced-based pediatric specific best practices to improve pediatric readiness and how improved readiness can facilitate high quality pediatric resuscitation.
  • Learn and practice a novel method to improve pediatric CPR quality.
  • Upon completion, participants will be well equipped to apply these tools (noted in the 2 above Learning Objectives) in their local care environments and move the needle forward on pediatric readiness and resuscitation.
  • This presentation will include components of a high quality collaborative cardiovascular and resuscitation program in a dispatch, EMS and / or healthcare system that has demonstrated improvement in survival from SCA.
  • This presentation will include strategies for implementing data collection and quality improvement programs in an ECC system to support accountability and reporting.
