Dr. Atkins is a Professor, Emerita, Pediatric Cardiologist, University of Iowa. Her clinical interest has been pediatric electrophysiology. Her research has focused on cardiac arrest and resuscitation with a specific interest in pediatric defibrillation. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed research papers relating to cardiac arrest. She is actively involved in the generation of CPR Guidelines with the American Heart Association and the International Liaison Committee for Resuscitation. Currently, she is the Immediate Past Chair, Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee, AHA. After the death of Richard Kerber, MD, her mentor and colleague, she and Linda Kerber,PhD established the UI HeartSafe Initiative promoting CPR training and improved AED access on the Universityof Iowa campus. Soon after this, James Merchant MD, a former colleague of Dr, Kerber, Linda Kerber and Dr. Atkins organized the Rotary-Kerber HeartSafe Community Campaign. She is the Medical Director for this campaign. Our mission is to increase awareness of cardiac arrest with free CPR and AED training to groups without easy access to instruction.
