Summary: This session will focus on sharing the co-design process for a mobile app to help cardiac arrest survivors and their families navigate their survivorship journey after hospital discharge.

Synopsis: Cardiac arrest is the ultimate heart failure – when the heart literally stops beating - and it happens to over 400,000 people in North America every year. Survival is challenging and the survivorship journey can be fraught with anxiety, depression, lack of connection and changes in how your brain works. To date there is no way to systematically help cardiac arrest survivors and their families navigate that journey after hospital discharge - help with access to trusted information, knowing what to expect, connecting with other survivors and tracking the outcomes that impact their everyday life. The research we are proposing is focused on co-designing a first-of-its kind mobile health application (app) – the Cadre app - to support quality survivorship for cardiac arrest survivors and their families.

Our research team, which includes survivors and family members as co-investigators, will work with the Centre for Digital Therapeutics at the University of Toronto to develop a robust prototype mobile app for testing. Mobile health is now recognized as a key factor in more equitable access to care and better health outcomes for many chronic conditions. For those living after cardiac arrest, this app will represent the lifeline and access to resources they have been looking for, for a very long time. Once the prototype app is finalized, we will seek large-scale funding to study how well it works and how best to get it into the hands of survivors across North America.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how mobile health technologies can improve the survivorship journey for SCA survivors and their families.
  • Describe the importance of using a co-design process to engage with SCA survivors and their families when developing interventions.
  • This presentation will describe three (3) strategies for implementing effective support systems for cardiac arrest victims, survivors and their families and rescuers.
  • This presentation will describe one or more survivor / rescuer stories that can be used to illustrate an effective chain of survival for cardiac arrest.
