Summary: Learn how the ACT Foundation is bringing Opioid Overdose Response Training to Canadian teens as part of their high school CPR and AED training. This session will highlight successful implementation strategies, challenges, solutions, and resources.

Synopsis: The landscape of emergency response is changing in Canada due to the increase of opioid overdoses and we all have a role to play. The ACT Foundation is in its second year of implementing Opioid Overdose Response Training as part of the High School CPR & AED Program it sets up in schools across the country. The program is built on a sustainable model that sees teachers trained to train their students.

In this presentation we will share and discuss strategies for implementing this program in high schools, including challenges, solutions, lessons learned, measurement and resources. We will also share highlights on guidance from school boards, teachers, curriculum consultants, health care providers, CPR Instructors and more.

In adding the Opioid Overdose Response Training, including the use of nasal Naloxone spray, to its current CPR & AED program in high schools, ACT is enhancing the lifesaving toolbox of teachers and students. This is especially timely given that young Canadians aged 15 to 24 are the fastest-growing population requiring hospital care for opioid overdoses. These lifesaving skills become life skills that students bring to their present and future families and communities.

Learning Objectives:

  • 1. After participating in this session, attendees will be familiar with potential challenges they may face and solutions in bringing opioid overdose response training to teens through high schools. 2. After participating in this session, attendees will be familiar with and able to identify a plan for implementation of opioid overdose response training in high schools as part of student CPR training programs.
