Summary: Performing CPR as a bystander can be traumatising. Discover Yorkshire Ambulance Service's approach to providing this support for lay individuals to help, guide and support those who have intervened at a cardiac arrest.

Synopsis: Often in the whirlwind of responding to a cardiac arrest the interventions of a bystander having performed CPR are inadvertently unrecognised. This presentation explores the consequences of this lack of recognition and/or support. Bystanders perform a vital component of the chain of survival but without ensuring our bystanders understand the emotional and physical effects this might have on them we are doing them a huge disservice and not affording them the support that they deserve. This presentation will discuss this impact on bystanders and what Yorkshire Ambulance Service have created to provide very simple but effective support for bystanders - A simple Post incident Care information leaflet

Learning Objectives:

  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to recognise the benefits of providing bystanders with a support mechanism after performing CPR.
  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to conceive a support system that would work in their locality to provide post incident care for bystander rescuers.
  • This presentation will describe three (3) strategies for implementing effective support systems for cardiac arrest victims, survivors and their families and rescuers.
