Summary: This session will describe new, multi-disciplinary insights into cardiac arrest survivorship and discuss the Cardiac Arrest Survival Alliance (CASA), an online community for patients, families, friends, caregivers, and advocates.

Synopsis of Presentation: This session will describe new, multi-disciplinary insights into cardiac arrest survivorship and discuss the Cardiac Arrest Survival Alliance (CASA), a program of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (SCAF). CASA—an online community for patients, families, friends, caregivers, and advocates—offers peer support, evidence-based information resources, monthly webinars, and access to experts—all designed to help community members recover, re-engage, and thrive.

The session will feature:
• Insights from CASA members
• A physician’s perspective on cardiac arrest survivorship (both as a clinician and survivor)
• A clinical psychology fellow’s overview of survivorship research conducted by hospitals and universities working with SCAF
• Ways to improve care for survivors and co-survivors, including systemic recommendations, social recommendations, and individual coping mechanisms
• Survivors’ and co-survivors’ stories and how they coped with survivorship
• Benefits of joining CASA.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about survivorship research conducted by hospitals and universities working with SCAF.
  • Learn about ways to improve care for survivors and co-survivors.
  • Learn about the Cardiac Arrest Survivor Alliance and the benefits of joining.
  • This presentation will describe one or more survivor / rescuer stories that can be used to illustrate an effective chain of survival for cardiac arrest.
