Ventilations During Cardiac Resuscitation: The Final Frontier

Summary: Ventilations are a critical component of CPR, yet our understanding of optimal ventilations is limited. Hear our current understanding of ventilation quality and future trends in training and research.

Synopsis: Ventilations are an important component of CPR. Despite this, there is a paucity of research examining the role of ventilations during cardiac arrest management. Guideline recommendations for ventilations during resuscitation are based on low-quality evidence and there are identified gaps in our knowledge of ventilations. In addition, ventilations are often neglected during CPR training as most of the focus is on performing high-quality chest compressions.

This presentation uses case-based discussions and real-world data to examine the evidence around current ventilation practices, discuss current base practices, and trends in future research. You’ll also hear the findings from our current research examining the quality of ventilations performed during resuscitation, the role for real-time feedback in practice and training, and our ongoing randomized controlled trial which will provide the first high-quality evidence of the impact of ventilation on patient outcomes from cardiac arrest.
