Summary: It is 2023 and we have only recently begun to recognize the need for female breasted manikins. Learn about barriers for rendering CPR on women, how to address them in trainings, and the urgent need for gender parity in CPR.

Synopsis: Combating gender disparities in acute cardiovascular conditions in the United States and around the world is a much-needed area of work. Specifically, we will focus on gender disparities in out- -of-hospital cardiac arrest and inform the audience about the epidemiological data on the disparities in CPR between men and women, as well as provide qualitative data from the literature on the barriers. In efforts to minimize the knowledge gaps and address hesitations and barriers, we will showcase work being done globally (Chicago, Middle East, and India) to address gender disparities via pictures and videos from in-country training. Furthermore, additional cultural barriers will be mentioned and how training in the Middle East and India is being implemented with success. Surveys results of participants from the trainings using the female breasted manikin will be shared as well. A highlight of our presentation will share the origin story of an anatomically accurate female breasted manikin and the impact it is already having and the potential positive impact it will continue to have on a global scale.

Learning Objectives:

To inform the audience of barriers to rendering CPR on women.
To showcase experience of participants using the female breasted manikins in 3 different regions of the world.
To motivate the audience to take steps towards obtaining gender parity in their training materials.
This presentation will include ways to educate citizens that can lead to a comprehensive change to a culture of excellence and improved CPR training in the community, schools and workplace.
This presentation will describe one or more survivor / rescuer stories that can be used to illustrate an effective chain of survival for cardiac arrest.
