Dr. Mark Whelchel is the Director of Healthcare and Prehospital Education at the American Red Cross. He graduated from St. Louis University with a Master of Science degree in Nursing as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Missouri St. Louis where he was the recipient of the Jonas Foundation Veterans’ Healthcare Scholarship.
Dr. Whelchel’s nursing career spans over 25 years and includes extensive experience as a clinician and educator in critical care, trauma, flight nursing, and bone marrow and heart transplantation. In addition to pursuing degrees in nursing, Dr. Whelchel earned a paramedic degree and subsequently taught in local EMT and Paramedic programs.
In his current leadership position, Dr. Whelchel plays an integral role as the liaison to the esteemed American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council, which develops guidelines and makes recommendations based on the most current evidence, including those published by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and several other healthcare professional societies and organizations. Dr. Whelchel ensures that the Council’s guidelines and recommendations are integrated into the American Red Cross Training Services products including resuscitation, aquatics and first aid and safety educational and certification programs. He is ever passionate about providing healthcare education to clinicians and lay persons and consequently takes a crucial hands-on approach to developing products.
