Summary: In this session, tips for increasing sudden cardiac arrest awareness and overcoming barriers to bettering cardiac emergency preparedness in schools will be provided by an educator and sudden cardiac arrest survivor.

Synopsis: While schools can serve as a gateway for training thousands of community members each year, it is often assumed that educators are unwilling or uninterested in learning CPR/AED, or that schools are already well prepared for cardiac emergencies. This session will explore the opinions of over 1200 educators in Illinois regarding their willingness to learn CPR/AED and the current level of cardiac emergency preparedness in schools. Equity gaps in training opportunities and preparedness in schools will also be discussed. In this session, tips for increasing sudden cardiac arrest awareness and overcoming barriers to bettering cardiac emergency preparedness in schools will be provided by an educator and sudden cardiac arrest survivor.

Learning Objectives:

  • To promote the CPR/AED training of school staff and advocate for mandated training as a means to increase survival rates and cardiac emergency preparedness.
  • To provide strategies for overcoming common barriers and aiding schools in becoming better prepared for cardiac emergencies.
  • This presentation will include ways to educate citizens that can lead to a comprehensive change to a culture of excellence and improved CPR training in the community, schools and workplace.
  • This presentation will describe one or more survivor / rescuer stories that can be used to illustrate an effective chain of survival for cardiac arrest.
