Newborns can require resuscitation at birth! Out of hospital births are on the rise. This session will review key concepts for newborn resuscitation to ensure quality care is provided anywhere births happen.

The rate of out of hospital births continues to be on the rise. There has been a 22% increase since 2019 and 125% increase since 2004 (Gregory et al., 2021). Studies within the United States have shown statistically significant increases in perinatal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in births outside the hospital (Watterberg, 2020). Additionally, if travel time to a medical facility exceeds 15-20 minutes, there is a greater risk for adverse neonatal outcomes including death.

At birth, approximately 10-20% of newborns require some assistance to begin breathing and less than 1% require extensive resuscitative measures (Doroba, 2021). Although most neonates do not require additional interventions beyond initial care steps to transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life, some will require additional assistance. Initial stabilization and resuscitation for the newborn is different than a pediatric or adult, with effective ventilation being the priority instead of compressions. Preparing by anticipating these unique needs, planning for various scenarios and ensuring equipment is ready in the prehospital environment will help improve outcomes for this population. Knowledge and competency in key concepts for newborn resuscitation will ensure quality care is provided anywhere the birth may take place.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate neonatal risk factors that may indicate an increased need for neonatal resuscitation.
  • Anticipate specialized neonatal resuscitation care needs in the prehospital environment.
  • This presentation will describe one or more survivor / rescuer stories that can be used to illustrate an effective chain of survival for cardiac arrest.
