Summary: Transform resuscitation care by prioritizing mastery of basics over advanced measures. Explore how in-hospital pit-crew-style drills can elevate CPR performance and replace fear and failure to rescue with courage and action.

Synopsis: Emergencies initiate the fight, flight, or freeze response causing many healthcare professionals to feel anxious, confused, and fearful, leading to immobilization. In-hospital first responders, regardless of experience, often hesitate to initiate CPR and perform defibrillation.

Existing bi-annual CPR training inadequately addresses the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical clinical CPR performance. Inconsistencies and lack of confidence among healthcare workers can lead to hesitation or even inaction, impacting patient survival rates. By incorporating standardized in-hospital pit-crew-style drills alongside basic, advanced, and pediatric life support courses, we can significantly improve staff self-efficacy and empower basic life support staff to initiate cardiac arrest care, including defibrillation.

In-hospital code drills can revolutionize confidence levels in cardiac arrest response. These positive learning outcomes can be replicated and scaled globally within resuscitation communities. By challenging the status quo and shifting our focus from advanced measures to mastering resuscitation basics, we can replace fear and failure to rescue with courage and a will to act, enabling transformative paradigm shifts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze the impact of continuous quality improvement programs, such as brief, hands-on, in-situ resuscitation drills, on fostering a culture of confidence and action among healthcare professionals, ultimately leading to better patient care and outcomes.
  • Examine the benefits of prioritizing mastery of basic life support skills and implementing in-hospital pit-crew-style drills to enhance staff self-efficacy, teamwork, and effective response in sudden cardiac arrest situations.
  • This presentation will include ways to educate citizens that can lead to a comprehensive change to a culture of excellence and improved CPR training in the community, schools and workplace.
  • This presentation will include components of a high quality collaborative cardiovascular and resuscitation program in a dispatch, EMS and / or healthcare system that has demonstrated improvement in survival from SCA.
  • This presentation will include strategies for implementing data collection and quality improvement programs in an ECC system to support accountability and reporting.
  • This presentation will describe one or more survivor / rescuer stories that can be used to illustrate an effective chain of survival for cardiac arrest.
