Tom P. Aufderheide, MD, MS, FACEP, Hon FACC, FAHA is a Professor of Emergency Medicine, Associate Chair of Research Affairs, and Director of the NIH-funded Resuscitation Research Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of emergency cardiac care, whose scholarly achievements have had a significant impact on the practice of emergency medicine. Dr. Aufderheide developed and pioneered use of out-of-hospital12-lead ECGs, reducing mortality by 38% in the US alone and now widely practiced throughout the world. Dr. Aufderheide’s discoveries, including the detrimental effects of excessive ventilation rates and incomplete chest recoil during CPR, active compression decompression CPR and the impedance threshold device to improve hemodynamics during CPR, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)-facilitated resuscitation for patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, have significantly improved patient survival and quality of life as well as shaped clinical practice nationally and internationally. In 2009, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), recognized for his significant contributions to the fields of medicine and public health.
