Dr. Lewis J Kaplan is a general, trauma and critical care surgeon at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania and the Section Chief of Surgical Critical Care at the Corporal Michael J Crescenz VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. He received a BA in Biology with honors from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA in 1984 and his MD from Rutgers Medical School in Piscataway, NJ in 1988. His surgical residency was completed at the Medical College of PA (MCP; 1988-1995) followed by Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (1996-1997). He held faculty positions which included MCP and Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA as well as Yale University in New Haven, CT. He was recruited back to Philadelphia for his current roles in 2013. Organizational service culminated in the Presidency of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (2020-2021). Dr. Kaplan serves in several professional societies in leadership roles and on multiple editorial boards including Critical Care Medicine, Surgical Infections, Injury as well as Critical Care Explorations where he served as an Associate Editor .
